Some cars have extremely shitty crash tests. Please watch what you are going to drive...

And despite that, I still really want a Fiat 500 Abarth.

I shudder every time I see that picture. At my old school district, I used to have to take students on 1200 mile road trips to competitions, by myself, in those deathtraps. Which were riding on dry rotted original tires (the vans were 11 years old at the time), and original windshield wipers that had long since shredded. My last year there, I refused to go, until they put new tires on the vans. They finally relented, and put tires on just one van. I ended up buying wipers out of my own pocket, so we didn't die.

Why does it seem all GM products designed for carrying children are also designed to kill the parents?

It's not that bad. http://www.cars.com/fiat/500/2014/…

They're orphan-generators. It's a secret scheme to raise a generation of Batmans and Spidermans.

My mom drove us around in a Pontiac Transport for at least seven years. With my mom's record for getting an accidents I'm lucky we never got in one in that car.

My mother owned a trans Sport Montana. never occurred to us that we would get killed if we crashed.

My younger brother drives an Astro LT, but he's a very safe driver and we're not very traffic-ey around here. The AWD/etc. adds a little mass, and I think the sub-frame is beefier - that being said, not terribly great. I know somebody driving a Montana (aka TranSport Mk. II), and they haven't hit anybody... yet.

Most modern superminis do pretty well in crash tests.

That's not what IIHS would have you think.

They make it sounds like they're all deathtraps, but now that I look for myself they don't seem too bad...

Huh, I keep seeing articles about how subcompact and mini cars are terrible. Like this one.
http://www.iihs.org/iihs/news/desk…
I suppose that

A lot of larger cars did badly in small overlap too. The next generation of cars will prepare for that test and be a lot safer.

Interesting, IIHS seems to think that all mini cars are death traps:

If more people drive them the less of a chance there is to become sandwiched between two Canyoneros.

Yesterday, a few friends and me were driving in my buddies 2009 Corolla SE (he's somewhat of a car guy - the Corolla's a manual). I'm in the backseat with two other grown guy's, and here he is doing speeds outside of legality.
I know, the Corolla's pretty new and whatnot, and I think it did OK in terms of crash testing. However, it reminded me of how easily I could die on an average sunday afternoon...
